As we move through 2025, more people than ever are exploring how to create an income online—and for good reason. Whether it’s the desire for more flexible, fulfilling work or the increasing pressure of today’s economy, the appeal of starting an online business is only growing. Parents, in particular, are searching for ways to support their families without returning to a rigid 9-to-5 schedule.

“I have too much on my plate and my kids are starting to suffer!” This is something I hear from my mom friends all the time, and it’s something I can totally relate to. Can you? I remember back a few years ago when I was trying to get my 3 children to school and nursery early when I bumped into one of my friends on the school run. She was a busy mom rushing into school with wet hair and a screaming child. She was late dropping off her little girl at the breakfast club before school, which meant she was now late for work. She looked at me and said, “I feel like such a bad mother!” I felt her pain, and my heart sank for her. It was at this time I was considering going back to work as we needed the money, but I was worried about the effect it would have on my family. Seeing my friend struggling that morning was the wake-up call I needed. I knew then that I was not going back to a job; I had to find a different way. I’ll share more on that later.
In today’s digital world, there are so many reasons why earning an income online is much more favourable than a second job or a traditional type of business. Here are just some of them –
- Flexible Working Hours – Starting an online business means you have the flexibility to work from anywhere, at any time. You can work on your own schedule, outside of the traditional 9-5 office hours.
- Work From Anywhere – You can work from your kitchen table, your home office or a local café. As long as you have a laptop and an internet connection, you can be in business!
- Work/Life Balance – If you’re a stay-at-home parent, or looking after elderly relatives, your first priority is likely your family. Running an online business could make it easier to balance your work and family responsibilities.
- Sense Of Purpose – Being your own boss can give you a real feeling of fulfillment, control, and purpose outside of your other commitments.
- Low Start-Up Costs – Compared to a franchise or a traditional brick-and-mortar business, an online business typically has lower start-up costs, meaning you can be up and running quickly without a huge financial investment or the need for premises and staff.
- Uncapped Earning Potential – A business that operates online can reach a global audience. And as you are open 24/7, 365 days a year, your potential for growth is virtually unlimited. You can even make money while you sleep!
- Study In Your Own Time – You can learn the information and skills you’ll need to start your new online venture in your own time, when it suits you.
So What Are The 3 Best Options To Start Earning Online?
There are many different types of businesses that can be started online from home, but here in detail, are the top 3 you should consider –
Affiliate Marketing – Affiliate Marketing is a good option for beginners or those who are looking to start a business with low start-up costs, as you don’t have to create your own products or handle any inventory. This business model involves promoting other people’s products or services for a commission, with sales that are made through your own unique affiliate link. If you love something, then share it with others! Depending on which company’s products you choose to promote, commissions can range from low-ticket ($10-$100) to high-ticket (paying hundreds or thousands $ per sale).
E-commerce – E-commerce businesses sell products or services online. This can include selling digital products like e-books or online courses. Other options include creating designs for a print-on-demand product or selling physical products from your own online shop. These days, there are lots of online marketplaces where you can get set up and start selling relatively quickly, like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Shopify.
Online Coaching or Consulting – Online coaching or consulting businesses are great if you have specific knowledge or qualifications in a particular area. This can include business training, health coaching or financial consulting, to name just a few of the many possibilities. - Sponsored Content: Creators in the US alone made over $8 billion from sponsored content in 2024, demonstrating the significant revenue generated from this area.
- Platform Payouts and Affiliate Marketing: Platform payouts reached $3.23 billion, and affiliate marketing generated $1.1 billion, further showcasing the diverse income streams available to content creators.”
In the early days, I had some doubts that I could do this; you might feel the same. You might be thinking…
“I don’t have enough time!” I found that you just need a small amount of time to get started… an hour in the evenings makes real headway. That’s 7 hours a week, 30 hours a month to work on creating your future and not relying on anyone else.
“Do I need to put my face all over social media every day?” You don’t have to! If you want to, then absolutely you can. I don’t, as I’m an introvert 🙂 I prefer to write articles, just like this one, and you could do the same.
“I don’t have the tech skills to start an online business!” I hear you! I remember about 15 years ago having to learn coding (!) just to set up a basic website. I had to place different codes everywhere “behind” my first website just to make it work. It was so difficult and time-consuming my head nearly popped off! 🙂 With technology these days, you can create an article, shoot a video or build a website from scratch in about half an hour, and it’s all click, drag and drop… It’s so simple now!
When I first got started, I knew success wouldn’t happen overnight. But just knowing that I’d taken that first step to learn how, meant that I felt immediate relief. I also knew I wouldn’t build a business one day and earn money the next. But if I found the right training, followed a step-by-step plan and kept going, I was going to create a change in my life and the feelings of excitement were real!

*So while it is possible to find free resources online, my advice would be to take a more professional approach and invest in yourself and your education. This will ensure you have the right mindset, training, tools, and tactics to succeed, rather than leaving it to chance. Looking back now, I’m so glad I took that first step. Making the decision to invest in myself and not a job was the best thing I ever did. I’m glad I was there for my children when they were little and really needed me. You don’t get that time back! I did all the school-runs, pick-ups, drop-offs, school events and playdates. I also remember how lucky I felt when I could rush to get one of my children if they were poorly and take them to a doctor’s appointment if needed.
Fast forward to today, and even though my children are all teenagers now, they still need me, my time, and my money! 🙂 I’m still so grateful I took the opportunity to start a business online that is totally flexible, and brings in an income whether I’m sat at the laptop or not. Most of my business is now fully automated and runs 24/7. This means I have a passive income stream… something I really appreciate. On last year’s holiday in Majorca, I made 1 sale while lying on the beach that earned me a $3,000 commission!
